Mercedes-Benz recently unveiled the latest version of its well-known luxury sedan, the E-Class. This sixth generation (W214) model boasts a complete body redesign, high-tech interior features, and efficient powertrains. Notably, the new E-Class is one of the last Mercedes vehicles to rely exclusively on internal combustion engines, as the automaker shifts its focus towards all-electric powertrains.
Exterior
The latest iteration of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, known as the W214, boasts several notable upgrades. For one, it features a longer wheelbase and a more aerodynamic body, which enhances both driving dynamics and interior space. In terms of styling, the E-Class retains its classic look, albeit with some modern touches such as a wider grille with illuminated surrounds, split taillights, and a full-width chrome strip above the number plate holder.
Under the hood, the W214 E-Class will be exclusively available with mild-hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains, which aligns with the growing trend towards vehicle electrification. The engines have been tweaked to deliver slightly higher combined outputs, thanks in part to a stronger electric boost of 23PS. The standard petrol and diesel models will all feature 2-litre four-cylinder engines, while the range-topping E-Class will utilize an electrified version of Mercedes’ six-cylinder engine. Rear-wheel steering has been added to the E-Class for the first time, which should improve handling and agility.
Overall, the latest E-Class promises to be an appealing option for those seeking a stylish, high-tech, and eco-friendly luxury sedan.
All models of the new E-Class come equipped with a 9-speed automatic transmission as standard. Additionally, the petrol and diesel engines all feature a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that includes a gearbox-mounted integrated starter motor, which provides more power and torque. The mild-hybrid setup also offers coasting capabilities that help to improve fuel efficiency.
Interior
The interior of the latest E-Class has undergone a significant overhaul, with a modern design that incorporates cutting-edge digital features, enhanced comfort, and top-quality materials. The dashboard features a simple layout with small air vents and a large MBUX Superscreen, which takes inspiration from the design of the EQS. The digital driver’s display is a separate floating unit, similar to the Hyperscreen found in Mercedes’ electric vehicle offerings.
The latest E-Class model comes with a range of advanced features as standard, including the latest version of the MBUX infotainment system and a high-end Burmester 4D sound system. Other notable standard features include four-zone climate control with electrically adjustable front air vents, a smartphone-based digital key, a voice assistant, and future AI-based routines for automatic AC and heating settings.
For the first time in the E-Class lineup, Level 4 autonomous technology is available as an option for driverless valet parking in areas where regulations permit, such as Germany. This feature was previously only offered on the S-Class.
India Launch
Mercedes-Benz India has confirmed that the long-wheelbase version of the new E-Class will be launched after the standard wheelbase model. Indian customers can expect to see the latest E-Class hit the market in 2024.
